Week of October 17, 2022 Small World Seafood Update
Man, I don't know why it feels so damn good that the Phillies beat the Braves to advance in the playoffs and the Eagles beat the Cowboys last night. All I know is that I feel so good! Now if we can only get rid of all those friggin political commercials. I've had enough of that! Those things should be banned. They add zero to the conversation and just leave you with a dirty feeling inside..gross...
Aaaanyway, this week we are going to have some powerhouse good stuff! We are approaching the end of Halibut season in Alaska which will remove competition for our beloved Nova Scotia halibut. Also, by November, many halibut fishing vessels re-gear to fish for lobster. But last week, lots of boats found their way out at the same time after things settled down from Hurricane Fiona a month ago. And they all come back at once so lots of supply means cheaper prices!!! Yay!
Now, I don't want to say this in any absolute terms but this may be the last time we see halibut in any good quantity til next spring so take advantage. It freezes extremely well too. Just a great fish that is priced so high in restos. You can get two pounds and feed four or five for what you would pay for one dish eating out!! We have a great recipe on our site for how to prepare it like chefs would too so no excuse...
And that second hurricane, Ian, that soaked the eastern seaboard really riled things up but after that, they feed fish came back in and so did the bigger fish that feed on them. In fact, I was in Brigantine yesterday and can tell you there were hundreds of dolphins in the inlet and out off shore. So fun.
The other big fish that came around off of the Jersey shore is Yellowfin (Ahi) tuna!!! We had some Canadian fiish a month or so ago. Well, they are making their way down the coast as they move through their migratory routes. Beautiful, sushi grade, fresh yellowfin tuna!! Again, we may see another shot of tuna before the end of the year but I wouldn't bet on it. It could happen but...So, get your sushi rolls on, your poke bowls whipped up, your crusting crusted and tartares plated!!! Local Jersey tuna, baby!!! And don't forget our ponzu sauce. Make your life easy...
And sushi grade salmon too? Yup. Our Faroe Island salmon is second to none raw or cooked up. Just try it if you haven't. You'll never be able to eat salmon from a supermarket or resto again. Kind of like tasting a really good loaf of bread. How can you go back after that to crappy bread? And now that you can also get full sides, too, well get your cameras ready...
Same for our Hokkaido scallops. Sushi grade, perfectly searable. Dynamite little nuggets...
Mussels are the shellfish of the week. Not sure about oysters yet. Plenty of smoked and marinated fish.
Fun time of the year. We have a lot of cool stuff in the works for next month with Thanksgiving coming before we know it.
And that's it for today. I know, I know, lots of words. But, hey, lots of info too, no?
Peace
