JUNE 29, 2021 SMALL WORLD SEAFOOD UPDATE
HELLO EVERYBODY!!!!
Well, this will be our last week of pick ups before we break for one week right after July 4th. So, once again, on this week, off next week and then back on the week after (week of July 12th). The week after the 4th of July is notoriously poor for fresh fish as many fishermen here take the weekend off and that carries over through that week. In fact, we are seeing tightening up already this week!!
We have some special stuff for all of you that are still here. We can see the city has emptied out some. Glad to see people are feeling comfortable enough to be mobile. For those who are here, though, we have a bunch of stuff that you can enjoy and use to carry over until we get back from the break.
First off, Atlantic salmon is extremely tight with small quantities available toward the end of the week. Doesn't look good. Sooooo, we are bringing back a crowd favorite, Fresh Steelhead trout fillet! This fish looks just like salmon with its orange flesh but tastes more like trout. In fact, it IS rainbow trout but when it goes out to sea and gets large, we call it Steelhead. This pristine fish is sustainably farmed in Scotland and is sushi grade! Get your poke bowls ready or sushi rolls or just cook off like you would salmon in the pan, oven or on the grill.
Speaking of sushi stuff and all, we are selling Unagi, or eel. This is the top of the line product that comes cooked, sauced and frozen in 9oz packs. Such an easy thing to make a meal with. Just heat up and make a rice bowl. What is more delicious? Oh, yeah. Nori sheets to go with, maybe?
Well, maybe shumai..Yesss!!! Shrimp shumai! This restaurant quality product was such a hit last month when we featured it. Comes frozen in 50 count bags costing $18 a bag. Do the math folks!. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying in a restaurant!
Speaking of cheaper than buying in a restaurant, many of you have been asking us when fresh cooked lobster meat would be coming back. We all got sooo spoiled last year with cheap lobster meat when whole lobsters were selling for $4lb up in in Maine. Well, not anymore. Not even close, actually. The New York Times was reporting a couple of weeks ago on how lobster rolls were selling for up to $34 each up in Maine!! What?!?! Yeah. Well, we managed to get a small shot of lobster meat from one of our favorite suppliers but it will cost $54lb. Now, before you throw your phone at the wall in a fit of rage, remember that you can make 5 lobster rolls from one pound. That comes out to $11 each and still beats the market by more than half!! I know it's a splurge and not for everyone but it is what it is. So many products at almost twice the price as last summer. Still cheaper than at a resto, my friend. And it's the holiday weekend..
One last special that we will be featuring this week is something for an important member of many families. When we portion fish, we produce a lot of trim and odd parts. I've been thinking about what we could do with it and have been freezing large quantities hoping to find a solution. Well, we did! We got together with a local producer of dog treats, Melmo's Treats, and offered then all this delicious trim to make something for your dogs and they did!! They made these wonderful, healthy treats using our fish along with Spent Grain from Love City Brewing in Callowhill. Can you get better than that?? I think not. Win win! Healthy treats, local byproduct happy pooches(and now you don't have to share your food...)
Along with all these goodies, we are still looking for another fish..Clams are the shellfish of the week. Oysters are Thatch Islands from Massachusetts. Shelf life is 10 days. We've added smoked trout to the smoked fish category. Shelf life is three weeks unless you freeze. By popular demand, we've brought back more chorizo and polish sausage from El Camino Real in Nolibs. One pack each, frozen so use when you want. Sooo good!
Phew....that's a lot of good stuff! But hey, we won't see next week so we thought we would just go crazy.. So remember us...Anyway....
Look out for the order form Thursday at 9am.
Peace
