Week of March 24, 2025 - Small World Seafood Update

Hello everybody!!

Not that simple trying to figure out what is what this week. Although weather has been nice enough around here, the North Altantic has been a little tough for the Faroe Islands. Also, the interruption of Heathrow airport late last week has caused backups and confusion for the timing of fish coming our way.

Why, you ask? Well, almost all fresh seafood coming from Europe comes by plane. Passenger planes, in fact. Every wonder why the airlines started limiting baggages and charging more to deter you from bringing a lot of stuff on vacay? Well, the hull is worth more for commercial transport. Yup, you could be flying back to the East Coast from Europe or from LA with fresh salmon or branzini under your bum....so to speak...And there you have it...the secret world of how fish gets from one part of the world to another...Any shock to that supply chain, and Heathrow is a huge one, can cause some headaches...

So, first thing is first. No fresh salmon from the Faroe Island due to weather but plenty of blast frozen. This should be the last of the bad weather for the season so by next week, things should be more regular. In its place, we will have some dynamite Steelhead trout from Norway! Now, this is not like the rainbow trout from last week. These are larger fish that look like salmon with a gorgeous orange color and are also sushi grade. It has become a favorite of many of you and I love that...

Second up, going up to the 51st state of Greenland (kidding..the fish is actually from Canada, the 52nd) we will have fresh Greenland turbot fillet! Bone white and absolutely melting in your mouth, this flat fish is a more northern cousin of halibut but with more fattiness. It simply glistens...One of my favorites. Great to bake in parchment or to roast in the oven. You could also poach it beautifully in a seafood broth with veggies for one elegant one pan dish!!

Branzini are back this week! Butterflied and head off. Also, for a whole fish, daurades also from Greece! We scale and gut them for you. Hey, we are getting into summer eating, no?

We will continue to roll with more Black Cod fillets this week. We were planning to do this for only one month but it may be that we can always have it. Just like the branzini. Let me know what you think, guys, on that one.

More lobster tails from South Africa but this time, we will more up a couple of sizes to 5.5oz tails. Bigger, meatier and the best of the best!!!

As far as specials go, many of you have been asking me if we planned on selling gefilte fish logs like we have in the past. The good ones. The answer is, Duhhh....The thing is that I am not sure if they will bring them down to us this week or next. That is out of our hands as it depends on when they want to drive down from Brooklyn. Just be sure that we will definitely have them by next week at the very latest..

Kismet bagels parbaked have beeen super popular with so many of you. We love that. This week, we will change out the flavor from everything bagels to Sesame. But here is the thing. There was a wee miscommunication on their side of things. Instead of 400 bagels (100 bags), they made 400 bags (1600 bagels!). So, sometimes, when the world gives you lemons, you discount the bagels!! So we will run a special on these most excellent bagels and sell them for $8 per bag instead of $10. Yay!!!

There are a few things that may come up this week but not sure on them yet. We still have some Martha's Vineyard bay scallops left. We have wild rock shrimp.

Littleneck clams are the shellfish of the week.... Oysters wil be Pine Points from Maine. We have lonsa and smoked fish..So many good things.. Oh, and babka kits too..breath, everyone..

Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....

I know, I know..Lots of words...

Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
