Week of August 8, 2022 Small World Seafood Update

Just so interesting to peek behind the curtain of the seafood business to get insight into the broader scene. For example, scallops were not heavily harvested the past couple of years. In 2020, that was due to very depressed demand since so many restaurants were closed. In 2021, the price of scallops went through the roof resulting in low demand once again. And now, in the last two weeks, there were days like today where the landings hit 100,000lb in the daily auction house in New Bedford.

Now, this doesn't mean that scallop prices will go down just yet but it does mean that they may go down going into the winter. The majority of the scallops coming in now will go to processing where they will be frozen. These scallops will serve as an outlet when fresh isn't around and will stabilize prices all around.

And this is happening with almost every product out there. Basically, prices are generally going down.

In fact, for the first time in what seems like a long while, the price of Faroe Island salmon will be going down! Yup, down to $28 for a 2lb bag from $30. Transportation costs have gone down, supply has stabilized a bit. All good signs for the future. Hey, at least when the price goes down, we take it down, right? (Unlike some supermarkets, actually..)

As for the featured fish for this week, the winds on the waters have been pretty dramatic so not many boats are out there. When we can't get from the sea, we turn to the rivers. So this week, we will get a nice shot of fresh Rainbow trout from our friends in Idaho! These fish will come with the skeletal bone out and either head on or head off. Two per order. Totally freezable as well..

I've been threatening (sort of) the end of fresh Venezuelan jumbo lump crab meat for the past couple of weeks. Well, it's official. Next Monday, they shut down for conservancy so this will be the last week for it. No idle threat this time...

Hokkaido scallops have been looking gorge lately. So happy with those little pearls. They sear up beautifully and can even be eaten raw. Yup, they are sushi grade.

Littleneck clams are the shellfish of the week. Not sure about the oysters yet. We have a few other things we are working on bringing to you but they are still up in the air.

One thing we definitely know we will have is more fresh Feta cheese from Valley Milkhouse in Berks County! That stuff was unbelievable! I made this chopped salad last time with romaine, tomato, cukes, red onion, avocado, our marinated seafood mix and that feta with some red wine vinegar and olive oil. OMG...is all. Or, slice up some watermelon and serve it with the feta. Mind blowing combo.

Anyway, we will have some fun stuff coming up wrap up the month of August and close the door on summer. So stay tuned with that.

And that's it from me, folks.

Peace
