Week of November 14, 2022 Small World Seafood Update
Hello, everyone!! Well, summer's over now...
Okay, let's get down to some nitty gritty stuff first. Please read this carefully so you've got it. We ARE doing pick ups normally this week. Next week is Thanksgiving week. Yeah...exactly. Anyway, in the past couple of years, we closed during that week since fresh fish is typically terrible that week. Plus, I want a needed break for my staff that work very hard through the year.
This year, though, we will try something a little different the week of Thanksgiving. We will open our shop at 444 N 4th St for walk ins (no pre-orders) on Monday Nov 21 and Tuesday Nov 22 from 11am til 5pm. We will have a ton of goodies for you to choose from. Fresh fish will be blast frozen and vac packed (a process that will blow you away) and lots of our usual suspects will also be available. I know some of you cannot make pick ups this Thursday or Friday so this is a good option for those thinking about travelling to a place with no good seafood.
One thing, though, if you are able to pick up this week, do so. We cannot guarantee to have everything you want on next Monday and Tuesday. We'll have a lot but not everything and when we sell out of something, well, we sell out. You will be able to pick out some good stuff and we will help you with that personally and you can pay right here with a card or cash or whatever...
Okay, now onto this week of heavy hitters. Remember when I told that halibut boats were re-gearing for lobster? Well, here comes the lobster meat!!! Fresh Canadian lobster claw and knuckle meat available for you guys this week! The meat is cooked and has a good week plus shelf life. You can also freeze the meat in you want by pouring the lobster meat and juices in a ziplock, removing as much air a s possible, spreading the meat out flat so it freezes quickly and voila!! Lobster rolls, lobster pasta, lobster risotto, lobster salad...Lobster Thanksgiving!!
Second up, this will be the last time we see fresh, local yellowfin (Ahi) tuna this year!! The timing of it usually relates to full moons and temperature. This is sushi grade tuna that is great for poke bowls or sushi rolls. Hey, you gotta eat healthy this weekend before you mess up you diet next week... This fish can also be frozen by wrapping each portion in plastic wrap, laying the pieces flat in your freezer so they freeze quickly and then you can bundle them into a zip lock. It will still be sushi grade when you thaw it. No worries!
Last special item is fresh rainbow trout from Idaho!!! Those of you who have had the opportunity to eat our trout will know how unbelievably good it is. You will get two options. With the head or without the head. In both cases, we've removed the bones. Now, this is the perfect fish for a Thanksgiving dinner!! (Yes, you can freeze this fish too!). How about roasting this fish stuffed with one of our fish cakes!!!! Now, that's probably closer to what people may have eaten for the first Thanksgivings!!!
Okay, one more. Jonah crab claws!!! These beautiful claws and knuckle come in the shell and are triple scored meaning you can bust them open to get to the sweet meat. They come to you frozen so a perfect app for Thanksgiving! If you have never had them, these are the Northern equivalent of Stone Crab claws that come from Florida...but at a fraction of the price..just saying. I love these things...
And now onto the special stuff. You blow a blood vessel yet? Hang tight. We are going to feature one of our good friends' (and customer) Aaji's Roast Garlic Tomato Lonsa!!! This is an Indian Coastal speciality that goes so well with seafood!! Actually, you can eat it on its own but topping off crab cakes, fish cakes, rainbow trout will blow you away! Also, it is mussels week. Yeah, mussels and lonsa is ridick...6 week shelf life on the stuff, by the way..
Second special is another good friend making some amazing stuff, Labneh from Erivan Dairy!!! It's all about the milk and the process. This yogurt cheese is unparalleled to anything you make make yourself at home. Creamy, tangy, fresh, healthy...i mean, serve it on a plate with pita chips or mix some with lonsa on some toast points. Palate explosion....A two month shelf life too...
One final special item comes from another friend, Yoav Perry from Perrystead Dairy in Fishtown. He made a cheese that is not available in stores yet. It is called "Toasted" and is a small puck or savory lactic curd dowsed with wild oregano and sage that are torched onto its surface before it ages so a delicate bloomy rind can grow on the burned surface. Easy, approachable and will give you the feeling of sitting by a campfire! Oh, and it just won 3rd place in the World Cheese Awards!!! World! Not PA, World....pretty cool and you get first dibs. 2.5oz puck with a 2-3 week shelf life.
We will have some more of Shevy's chocolate babka kits and pie doughs from Oui Pastries available this week.
Plenty of fresh Faroe Island salmon and Hokkaido scallops for you to devour. Both sushi grade as well. We will have more salmon Char Siu from El Camino this week plus some smoked trout fillets from Acme Smoked fish in Brooklyn. Smoked fish has a month shelf life and chunky whitefish the same.
Don't forget your shrimp. Don't forget you crab meat. Don't forget your marinades. Don't forget we may not see you for two weeks so load up!
Are you blowing some brain veins yet? I am....
Fun time of the year. We have a lot of cool stuff in the works for next month with Thanksgiving coming before we know it.
And that's it for today. I know, I know, lots of words. But, hey, lots of info too, no?
Peace
