  HELLO EVERYBODY!!

Well, it's always something...hahaha...We actually got snow. How about that?

First of all, I love how much people play with their food. We sold lots of dredges and over 100 thermometers in the city last week. That says a lot about how adventurous people are willing to be. It is really terrific. So many people emailed us or messaged us about the culinary instruction last week about dredging and batters. So many of you did an amazing job frying the proper way. What a difference, right? If you are new to this or missed last week's emails, you can go the our website, smallworldseafood.com to read past emails. The website is also a great source for recipes that cover important technique. What else is there to do, right?

It is quite timely that today is Groundhog Day. Mainly because of the movie, of course. If you haven't seen it, you must. One of the great comedies out there that also has a great message about what would happen if every day was the same and repeated itself over and over. Before Covid, it was hard to imagine that. But now, except for fish day....ughhh...I totally get it. One of the messages in the movie is that we have choices when life becomes repetitive and stagnant. We can take that opportunity to learn something. We can take the opportunity to help someone. We can take the opportunity to teach someone. We can become better people. I won't post a clip from the movie because there are sooo many good ones and you should just see the movie, damnit!!. For those who love that movie, am I right or am I right or am I right? And the crowd chimes "Bing!"

Anyway, the fish sitch is totally affected by the storm. As you can imagine, no boats are out locally for good reason. Transportation is not happening today going north or south. Trucks were idle. However, the only place to look for the freshest stuff IS only north and south. So, I have been on the phone all morning trying to secure a couple of things for us. From the North, there is a chance at halibut fillet!! Yay!! Lots of boats came in this weekend with loads of fish but guess what? There is no one to sell some to because most things in the northeast are shut down. That means the price is dropping fast which is always good for us. it is usually pretty expensive this time of year.

The other fish we are looking to get our hands on is Spanish mackerel again. This fish has been the darling of the season for you all and for good reason. Such a flavorful fish. These babies are coming from Florida where they are settled for a bit before they start their migration north in a couple of months. We have great recipes on the website for both the halibut and mackerel. I highly encourage you to check them out.

As this weekend also happens to be Super Bowl Sunday, some of you may be thinking about things to prepare although who's actually having a party, right? Shrimp cocktail is always a fun thing. Mini crab cakes is always a winner. But if you are going to play with your food anyway, why not get really artsy? Sooooo, we are going to feature more of Oui Pastries in Old City's puff pastry sheets. You get two 1lb sheets frozen. Here are some shnazzy ideas for you. Think onion tarts, mushroom tarts, parmesan sticks, etc. Here is a great video on how to do some of these things with puff.

As for the rest of it, no scallops again this week. Mussels are in play. Not sure which oysters will be available yet. We will continue to sell the dredge because, well, it is just helpful. Just like the fish stock and parsley butter.

So, here we all are just sitting at home and trying to keep busy but getting antsy anyway. It is hard to sit still. When i feel like this, I usually like to put some music on that takes me out to another place. A place where I can move. I place where I can stretch out. A place where I can let loose. A warmer place for sure! So if there is someone in the house with you, grab them. If you are solo,  use a mirror or just move some furniture in the living room out the way. Whatever it is, just play this.
